George Orwell’s dystopian masterpiece, Nineteen Eighty-Four is perhaps the most pervasively influential book of the twentieth century. The novel is startlingly original and haunting that creates an imaginary world that is completely convincing, from the first sentence to the last four words.
My brief was to commercialise an electronic edition of George Orwell’s 1984. The interactive installation uses projected graphics that are controlled and manipulated by a Wacom tablet. The aim was to encourage people to re-read the book in a different medium, and entice new readers whilst sensitising them to the theme of Freedom.
So, how does it work? The real time visuals are manipulated, continually changing as the stylus pen glides across the surface of the tablet. The tablet registers changes in pressure and the x and y values and responds accordingly causing the visuals to react.
